Radical Revision - Video Project
You will be making a video for your final project, and there are many different ways you can take this idea. The end result must be 5-10 minutes, interactive, and well-thought out, and it must show critical thinking.
Here are some ideas:
You can take the footage from any of the documentaries we've watched as a class, and re-cut the scenes to make a re-cut trailer of your own. You may use the images of the actual film, but change the order of them, add your own music and voice-over, and change the meaning of the film using these tools as rhetoric. Here's a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRiSypCvriY
You may make a 5-10 minute documentary on the subject you researched for your feature article (or another related subject that interests you.) This involves interviewing subjects on tape and teaching the audience something new. Use the documentaries we have watched as a class as examples.
You may make a short film based on one of the snapshots you wrote about for Paper 1. Take the subject that you wrote about and turn it into something visual.
You may take one of your interviews for your feature article, and turn it into a short film. This can be done artistically and creatively, and you may write music/use images to tell a story based on the audio recording. Here's a great example of that: http://vimeo.com/58659769 (This one was made by a college student at Middlebury College.)
What I'm looking for here is interaction-- we will be screening these videos for the class at the end of the semester. Make sure that your project makes sense to the intended audience (myself and your classmates) and that it tells a story on its own (meaning: the class shouldn't need to have read your paper/feature article or seen the documentary you choose to make a re-cut trailer of, etc. to understand your short film.) Make sure you also have a description of your process to discuss with the class when you screen your video. You will be presenting on that orally in addition to showing your film.
You may work in groups if you'd like, but I don't want any group to be larger than three students. If you are a group of two or three, your film should be AT LEAST 10 minutes long. You may also do this project on your own.
Ahead of time, you’ll need to have a one-page proposal for what you think you will be doing for your video project, with detailed description. The proposal needs to be about 300 words, due Tuesday April 9th.
When you turn in your videos to me on April 16th, you will also turn in a 1-2 page Process Memo, explaining the process of how you made this film. Why did you choose this topic, and how does it fit your intended audience (myself and your classmates)? How does your project deal with the five elements we discussed in class, 1.) Tone, 2.) Style, 3.) Content, 4.) Purpose and 5.) Audience? What was most challenging, and most enjoyable, about making this film? Like all other papers for this class, the process memo MUST be typed, or I will not accept it.
When you turn in your final project, you will upload it to our wordpress site (where you post journal entries), and also email a copy to me. Projects MUST be titled!
Proposals Due: Tuesday 4/9/13
Final Projects Due to Me (with Process Memos): Tuesday 4/16/13
Final Project Presentations: 4/18/13-4/25/13
